Floatation Therapy in Falmouth: What It Is and What to Expect

If you've searched for floatation therapy in Falmouth or Cornwall, chances are you've heard a little about floating but aren't quite sure what actually happens once you step through the door. That's exactly what this guide is for.

At Soul Float, we're Falmouth's dedicated floatation therapy and wellness studio and we believe wellness is the full picture, not just one part of it. Here's everything you need to know before your first float.

What Is Floatation Therapy?

Floatation therapy (sometimes called float therapy, floating, or sensory deprivation therapy) involves lying in a float pod or float cabin filled with around 11 inches of water, heated to skin temperature and filled with 500 kgs of Epsom salts. The high salt content means you float effortlessly on the surface, with no pressure on your joints, muscles, or spine.

Within a few minutes, it's hard to tell where your body ends and the water begins. Your senses quieten down, and your body and mind have the chance to properly rest without any distractions or stimulus.

What's Provided? So You Don't Need to Bring Anything

One of the most common questions we get is "what do I need to bring?". The honest answer is: nothing but yourself, although some people like to wear swimmers for their first float. Because we provide:

  • Towels

  • Ear plugs

  • A float halo for extra head and neck support

  • Shampoo, conditioner and body wash

  • A private vanity room for afterwards

Common First-Timer Questions

Will I fall asleep? Many people do and that's completely fine and if that’s the case, it is probably the rest your body was in need of.

What if I don't like the feeling of water in my ears? Ear plugs are provided, so this is easy to manage.

Can I float if I can't swim? Yes the salt concentration means you float on the surface without any effort, so swimming ability makes no difference. Both the float tanks have around 11 inches of water in so are very shallow.

Is it claustrophobic? Our rooms are private and spacious and you're always in control of almost everything in the room including the lighting, door and getting in and out of the float tank at any stage. There is a call button in each of the float rooms if you do have any problems.

Why Falmouth, Why Cornwall, Why We Started?

Cornwall's pace of life already leans toward the outdoors, the sea and nature. For locals working here, life can still move fast and so we wanted to create a sanctuary for people to step away. For holiday makers, a float provides an opportunity to take your holiday resting even deeper and really switch off in a float. Whether you're a Falmouth local looking for a regular reset or visiting Cornwall and wanting to build a little wellness into your trip, Soul Float is a space designed for exactly that.

From a personal health journey and finding floating a tonic to some of my own personal health issues, I become devoted to the idea of sharing this with others. As with many things in the South West, options were limited, so we saw a gap in the market and wanted to provide this much needed space to locals and visitors alike.

We're proud to offer more than just floating, with treatment rooms, a yoga studio and an infrared sauna all sitting alongside our float rooms. Because to us, wellness has always been the full picture.
